A distinctive galaxias with vertical rows of pale-edged dark spots along the side, a dark diagonal stripe below the eye and reddish-orange fins with dark margins. Spotted Galaxias have a wider body than most other Galaxias species.

Generally in still or slow flowing streams at low elevations close to the sea. Usually found near cover such as fallen timber or rocks in lakes or near the edges in streams.

Southern Australia, although the distibution is patchy but is found around much of Tasmania
