About

Common along Tomahawk Beach in the rock pools this species is believed to originated in Tasmania and is hard to distinguish from Pyura praeputialis from external views although P. praeputialis is a larger species they are close to identical hance the naming of this species as "doppelgangera".

Identification

It has a thick, leathery outer covering, called a test or tunic, which is often obscured by algae.

Size

Usually does not grow larger than 60mm

Habitat

Low rocky intertidal reefs and subtidal rocky reefs

Distribution

Southern Australia including around Tasmania
